Combine a conjugated form of estar with a gerundio (the -ing form of the verb) to highlight an action happening right now, in progress.
| Ending | Gerund ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ar | -ando | hablar → hablando |
| -er | -iendo | comer → comiendo |
| -ir | -iendo | vivir → viviendo |
| yo | tú | él/ella/usted | nosotros | vosotros | ellos/ustedes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| estoy | estás | está | estamos | estáis | están |
Quick trick: unlike English, Spanish doesn't use estar + gerundio for near-future plans ("I'm eating out tomorrow" ≠ estoy comiendo mañana) — it's strictly for what's happening at this very moment.
Common signal words: ahora (now), ahora mismo (right now), en este momento (at this moment), todavía (still).
1.Give the gerund form of "hablar":
2.Estoy ___ (comer) ahora mismo.
3.Ellos ___ (estar) jugando fútbol.
4.Give the gerund form of "leer":
5.Mi hermana está ___ (dormir) en su cuarto.
6.Choose the correct gerund: "¿Qué estás ___ (decir)?"
7.El camarero está ___ (pedir) la orden a la cocina.
8.Nosotros ___ (estar) leyendo un libro.
9.True or false: "estoy comiendo mañana" correctly means "I'm eating out tomorrow."
10.Give the gerund form of "oír":
11.Ahora estamos ___ (vivir) en Bogotá.
12.Choose the phrase that best signals estar + gerundio:
Book a class with Ángel and describe what's happening right now, in real time.
