Pretérito Indefinido

CEFR A2 · Lesson 1 of 9

This is the tense you reach for to talk about finished actions in the past — what you did yesterday, last year, or two minutes ago.

The core idea

The pretérito indefinido (often just called "the preterite") describes actions that are completed — with a clear beginning and end, seen as a finished event rather than a habit or ongoing state.

  • A single completed action: Comí a las dos. (I ate at two.)
  • A sequence of past events: Llegué, saludé y me senté. (I arrived, said hello, and sat down.)
  • An action with a specific duration that's now over: Viví allí dos años. (I lived there for two years.)

Key irregular verbs

A handful of very common verbs break the pattern completely — and unlike regular preterites, none of these carry written accents.

Examples

Ayer hablé con mi hermana.Yesterday I talked with my sister.
¿Comiste en casa anoche?Did you eat at home last night?
Vivieron en Madrid durante dos años.They lived in Madrid for two years.
El año pasado viajé a España.Last year I traveled to Spain.
Fui al cine y luego hice la tarea.I went to the movies and then I did my homework.
💡

Watch the accents: hablo (I speak, present) and habló (he/she spoke, preterite) are spelled almost identically — the accent mark is the only difference, and it changes both meaning and pronunciation.

🔎

Common time markers: ayer (yesterday), anoche (last night), la semana pasada (last week), el año pasado (last year), hace tres días (three days ago) — these usually signal that the indefinido is the tense you need.

⚠️

Watch out: ser and ir share the exact same preterite forms (fui, fuiste, fue…). Context always tells you which one is meant — "fui al cine" (I went) vs. "fui profesor" (I was a teacher).
