Pretérito Imperfecto

The tense for setting the scene — what things were like, what used to happen, and what was going on when something else occurred.

The core idea

The pretérito imperfecto describes the past without focusing on when it started or ended — it's for background, habits, and things that were simply ongoing.

  • Habitual/repeated past actions: Cuando era niño, jugaba en el parque. (When I was a kid, I used to play in the park.)
  • Descriptions in the past — people, places, weather, time, age: Hacía mucho frío y eran las diez. (It was very cold and it was ten o'clock.)
  • An action in progress, often interrupted by another: Yo dormía cuando sonó el teléfono. (I was sleeping when the phone rang.)

Only three irregular verbs

Unlike the preterite, the imperfect has almost no irregular verbs — just these three:

Examples

De niña, vivía en Barcelona.As a girl, I used to live in Barcelona.
Mis abuelos siempre cocinaban los domingos.My grandparents always used to cook on Sundays.
Hacía calor y el cielo estaba despejado.It was hot and the sky was clear.
Yo tenía diez años cuando nos mudamos.I was ten years old when we moved.
Íbamos a la playa todos los veranos.We used to go to the beach every summer.

Quick trick: if the English translation naturally fits "used to…" or "was/were …-ing", the imperfect is almost always the right choice.

Common time markers: siempre (always), todos los días/años (every day/year), de niño/a (as a child), a menudo (often), mientras (while) — these usually call for the imperfect rather than the preterite.
