Imperfecto de Subjuntivo

CEFR C1 · Lesson 1 of 9

One rule builds every form, irregulars included — and it unlocks everything else at this level.

One rule, zero exceptions

This is the most reliable rule in Spanish grammar. Take the ellos form of the pretérito indefinido, drop -ron, and add the endings. Every irregularity in the preterite carries through automatically — there is no separate list to memorise.

💡

-ra or -se? They're interchangeable in almost every context. The -ra form dominates in Latin America and in speech everywhere; -se sounds more literary and is commoner in Spain's written register. Pick -ra as your default and simply recognise -se when you read it.

🔎

Watch the nosotros accent. Habláramos, tuviéramos, fuéramos — the stress moves back one syllable and needs a written accent. It's the only form that does.

Where you'll actually use it

Si clauses are only one of its jobs. The imperfect subjunctive appears wherever a subjunctive trigger sits in a past or conditional main clause.

Present vs. past trigger
Present trigger → presente subj.Past trigger → imperfecto subj.
Quiero que vengas.Quería que vinieras.
Es necesario que estudies.Era necesario que estudiaras.
Le pido que me ayude.Le pedí que me ayudara.
Dudo que lo sepa.Dudaba que lo supiera.
Busco a alguien que hable ruso.Buscaba a alguien que hablara ruso.

Examples

Me pidió que llegara temprano. He asked me to arrive early.
No había nadie que supiera la respuesta. There was nobody who knew the answer.
Ojalá tuviera más tiempo.I wish I had more time.
Quisiera hacerle una pregunta.I'd like to ask you a question. — very polite
Era imposible que lo hiciera solo.It was impossible for him to do it alone.
✨

The politeness trick. Quisiera, pudiera and debiera work as ultra-courteous versions of quiero, puedo and debo. Quisiera hablar con el director is noticeably more deferential than quiero hablar — useful in any formal setting.
