CEFR C1 · Lesson 2 of 9

Spanish conditional "si" sentences come in three types, depending on how real or how far in the past the condition is.

The core idea

Spanish conditional ("si") sentences come in three types, depending on how real or how far in the past the condition is.

The three types
TypeSi clauseMain clause
1. Real / likelypresent indicativepresent / future / imperative
2. Hypotheticalimperfect subjunctiveconditional
3. Contrary-to-fact (past)pluperfect subjunctiveconditional perfect

Examples

Si llueve, me quedo en casa.If it rains, I stay home. — real, likely
Si fuera rico, compraría una casa en la playa. If I were rich, I'd buy a beach house. — hypothetical
Si hubiera sabido, te habría llamado. If I had known, I would have called you. — past regret
Si tienes tiempo, llámame. If you have time, call me. — type 1 with an imperative
Building the forms

Imperfect subjunctive: take the ellos preterite, drop -ron, add -ra/-ras/-ra/-ramos/-rais/-ran. Hablaron → hablara.

Conditional: infinitive + -ía/-ías/-ía/-íamos/-íais/-ían. Viajar → viajaría.

Conditional perfect: habría + participle. Habría llamado.

⚠️

The rule that trips up every learner: after si you can never use the present subjunctive or the conditional. Si tendría ✗ and si tenga ✗ are both wrong. It's si tengo or si tuviera. This is the single most recognisable advanced-learner error.

💡

Type 3 shortcut: both clauses can use the pluperfect subjunctive interchangeably — Si hubiera sabido, te hubiera llamado works just as well as habría llamado. You'll hear both in real speech.

Mixed conditionals

The two halves don't have to share a time frame. A past condition can have a present consequence, which is where regret really lives.

Si hubiera estudiado medicina, ahora sería médico. If I had studied medicine, I'd be a doctor now. — past condition, present result
Si no fuera tan tímido, habría hablado con ella.If I weren't so shy, I would have talked to her. — present trait, past result

Saying "if" without si

Alternatives
StructureNuanceExample
de + infinitivocompact, formalDe haberlo sabido, te habría llamado.
como + subjuntivowarning or threatComo llegues tarde, me voy.
siempre que / con tal de queprovided thatTe ayudo siempre que me lo pidas.
en caso de quein caseEn caso de que llueva, llévate el paraguas.
a no ser que / a menos queunlessIré a menos que llueva.
🔎

All of these take the subjunctive — except si. That's the quirk: si is the one conditional connector that uses the indicative in type 1. Every alternative in the table above requires a subjunctive.
