Verbos con Preposición

CEFR C1 · Lesson 8 of 9

The detail that quietly separates a very good speaker from a native one. There's no rule — but there is a structure.

Why this is hard

Many Spanish verbs demand a specific preposition, and it rarely matches English. You dream with someone, count with someone, insist in something. There's no logic to derive — but grouping by preposition makes them far easier to absorb.

⚠️

The classic English interference errors: pensar en not pensar sobre; soñar con not soñar de; depender de not depender en; casarse con not casarse a; and entrar en (or entrar a in Latin America), never entrar alone.

When the preposition changes the meaning

Same verb, different preposition
VerbMeaning AMeaning B
pensar en / pensar deto think aboutto have an opinion of
contar con / contarto count onto tell (a story)
quedar en / quedar conto agree toto arrange to meet
acabar de / acabar conto have justto put an end to
dar con / dar ato findto look out onto
¿Qué piensas de la película? What do you think of the film? — opinion
Pienso en la película todo el tiempo.I think about the film all the time.
Quedamos en vernos a las ocho.We agreed to meet at eight.
Quedé con María en el centro.I arranged to meet María downtown.
💡

Learn them in phrases, not lists. Cuento contigo sticks; "contar + con" doesn't. Memorise a short sentence you'd actually say and the preposition comes along for free.
