Verbos Pronominales

CEFR C2 · Lesson 2 of 9

Adding "se" to a verb rarely means "oneself". Often it changes the meaning entirely — and no dictionary entry quite captures why.

Se is not just "oneself"

You learned reflexive verbs at A2: lavarse, levantarse — you do it to yourself. But most pronominal verbs aren't reflexive at all. The se changes the verb's meaning, its aspect, or both.

Pairs that mean different things

Without se vs. with se

The aspectual se

With some verbs, se doesn't change the dictionary meaning but adds completion — the action is finished, total, consumed. It's optional, and leaving it out sounds oddly flat to a native ear.

Completion
NeutralWith se — completed
Comí la tarta.Me comí toda la tarta.
Bebió el agua.Se bebió el agua de un trago.
Leyó el libro.Se leyó el libro en una noche.
Aprendió el poema.Se aprendió el poema de memoria.
Sabe la lección.Se sabe la lección perfectamente.
💡

The aspectual se needs a defined quantity. Me comí la tarta ✓ (a specific cake, finished) but Me comí tarta ✗ — with no boundary there's nothing to complete. This is why it never works with a bare plural or an uncountable noun.

Verbs that only exist with se

A handful have no non-pronominal form at all: arrepentirse, atreverse, quejarse, jactarse, suicidarse, fugarse, adueñarse. There's no atrever in Spanish.

Me arrepiento de haberlo dicho.I regret having said it.
No se atrevió a preguntar. He didn't dare ask.
Se queja de todo constantemente. He complains about everything constantly.
🔎

Why dictionaries fail you here. Looking up llevar gives you "to carry", which won't help you parse Me llevo bien con él (I get on well with him) or Se llevó mi paraguas (he took my umbrella). Pronominal forms deserve to be learned as separate vocabulary items.
