Indefinido vs. Imperfecto

CEFR B1 · Lesson 1 of 9

You already know both past tenses on their own. Now comes the real skill: choosing the right one, in the same story, without stopping to think.

The core idea

Imperfecto sets the scene — descriptions, habits, background states with no clear end in sight. Indefinido moves the story forward — completed events, specific actions, things that happened and finished.

A classic pattern: imperfecto paints the background, indefinido interrupts it. Estaba durmiendo cuando sonó el teléfono. (I was sleeping when the phone rang.)

Examples

De niño, jugaba en el parque todos los días.As a kid, I used to play in the park every day. — habit
Ayer jugué al fútbol con mis amigos.Yesterday I played soccer with my friends. — single event
Mientras cocinaba, mi hermano llegó a casa. While I was cooking, my brother arrived home. — background + interruption
Vivíamos en Lima cuando yo era pequeño.We lived in Lima when I was little. — ongoing state
Hacía frío, así que cerré la ventana. It was cold, so I closed the window. — description + action
💡

The tricky part: a bounded duration, even a long one, usually takes indefinido — because it has a clear end. Ayer llovió todo el día (It rained all day yesterday) uses indefinido, not imperfecto, because "all day" is a complete, finished stretch of time.

🔎

Verbs that change meaning: a few verbs shift sense between the two tenses. Conocía a Marta = I knew Marta; conocí a Marta = I met Marta. Likewise sabía (I knew) vs. supe (I found out), and quería (I wanted) vs. quise (I tried).
