Perífrasis Verbales

CEFR B2 · Lesson 7 of 9

Two verbs working as one. These are the structures that let you say "I've just", "I keep on" and "I've been doing it for" — things Spanish has no single verb for.

The core idea

A perífrasis verbal is two verbs acting as a single unit: an auxiliary that carries the conjugation, sometimes a linking word, and a main verb in the infinitive, gerund or participle. The auxiliary loses its literal meaning and contributes aspect instead.

With the infinitive

Infinitive periphrases
StructureMeaningExample
ir a + inf.near futureVoy a salir.
acabar de + inf.to have justAcabo de llegar.
empezar a + inf.to startEmpecé a estudiar a las ocho.
volver a + inf.to do againVolví a leerlo.
dejar de + inf.to stopDejé de fumar.
ponerse a + inf.to set about, suddenly startSe puso a llorar.
tener que + inf.obligationTengo que irme.
estar a punto de + inf.to be about toEstá a punto de salir.
💡

Acabar de is the one to master first. English needs a whole construction — "I have just arrived" — where Spanish has one tidy structure: acabo de llegar. Note it stays in the present: acabé de llegar means something different (I finished arriving).

With the gerund

Gerund periphrases
StructureMeaningExample
estar + ger.in progress nowEstoy comiendo.
seguir / continuar + ger.to keep onSigue lloviendo.
llevar + time + ger.to have been doing forLlevo dos horas esperando.
ir + ger.gradual progressVoy entendiendo poco a poco.
andar + ger.to go around doingAnda buscando trabajo.
🔎

Llevar + gerundio replaces a structure English does differently. "I've been waiting for two hours" is llevo dos horas esperando — present tense, not perfect. Saying he esperado dos horas suggests the waiting is over.

With the participle

Participle periphrases
StructureMeaningExample
llevar + part.cumulative totalLlevo leídos tres libros.
tener + part.accumulated resultTengo hechos los deberes.
dejar + part.to leave in a stateDejé preparada la cena.

With participle periphrases the participle agrees with the object: Tengo escritas tres cartas.

Examples in context

Acabo de hablar con ella.I've just spoken with her.
Llevo dos horas esperando el tren.I've been waiting for the train for two hours.
Sigue lloviendo desde ayer. It's still raining since yesterday.
Volvió a llamar tres veces. He called again three times.
Se puso a llover de repente. It suddenly started raining.
Dejé de fumar hace cinco años.I quit smoking five years ago.
⚠️

Volver a is not "to return". Volví a leer el libro means I read it again, not that I went back and read it. Spanish has no direct equivalent of the English prefix "re-", so this periphrasis does that job.
