1. Two kinds of object

In most sentences someone does something (the verb) to something or someone. Spanish separates two roles:

Illustration titled Objeto directo vs. objeto indirecto: on each side someone hands a gift to another person; blue arrows mark the direct object and red arrows the indirect object.
Read the picture like a sentence: who gives (the subject), what travels from hand to hand — the gift, the book: the direct object, lo / la — and who receives it: the indirect object, le. Él le da el libro a ella → Se lo da.
Direct object

What? / Whom? — receives the action directly

lo la los las

They change with gender and number.
Indirect object

To whom? / For whom? — receives something or is affected

le les

No gender: le works for him, her and you (usted).

2. Lo, la or le? Decide in 3 steps

  1. 1
Find the verb and ask what it does

Does the person or thing receive the action (I see her, I call him, I buy it)? Or do they receive something (I give him a book, I tell her the truth)?

  2. 2
Receives the action → lo / la / los / las

Match the gender and number of what you replace: el pan → lo, la carta → la, los niños → los, las flores → las. A whole idea is lo: Ya lo sé.

  3. 3
Receives something, or is affected → le / les

Verbs of giving and communicating (dar, decir, mandar, preguntar, pedir, enseñar, regalar) and verbs like gustar. No gender: le = to him, to her, to you.

💡

Quick test: if the sentence already has a direct object (a thing that's given, said or sent), the person is almost always indirect → le. Le doy un regalo. Le digo la verdad.

Same person, different verb
Direct → lo / laIndirect → le
Veo a Ana.
La veo.
Le escribo a Ana.
Le escribo.
Llamo a Luis.
Lo llamo.
Le hablo a Luis.
Le hablo.
Invito a María.
La invito.
Le digo la verdad a María.
Le digo la verdad.
Ayudo a mis padres.
Los ayudo.
Les pregunto a mis padres.
Les pregunto.

3. Verbs that trick English speakers

English hides the difference behind prepositions (listen to, wait for, ask for). Spanish doesn't — learn these with their pronoun.

ayudarlo / la La ayudo con la tarea. help her — direct, like English
llamarlo / la Lo llamé ayer. call him
buscarlo / la La estoy buscando. look for her — no “for” in Spanish
escucharlo / la Siempre lo escucho. listen to him — no “to” in Spanish
esperarlo / la Te espero en la puerta. wait for you — no “for” in Spanish
preguntarle Le pregunté la hora. ask him (something)
pedirle Le pedí un favor. ask her for (something)
decirle Le dije que sí. tell him
gustar · encantar · molestar · dolerle Le encanta bailar. the person is affected → le
pagarle · lo Le pagué a Juan. / Lo pagué yo. pay someone (le) / pay the bill (lo)

Leísmo: in much of Spain you'll hear le for a man as a direct object (Le vi ayer). It's accepted there, but in Mexico and Latin America it's always Lo vi ayer — use lo and you're right everywhere.

4. Where the pronoun goes

Before a conjugated verbLo compro. No lo compres.
Infinitive — two optionsLo voy a comprar.Voy a comprarlo.
Gerund — two optionsLo estoy comprando.Estoy comprándolo.
Affirmative command — attached¡Cómpralo!¡Dímelo!

When you attach a pronoun, add a written accent if needed to keep the stress: comprando → comprándolo, compra → cómpralo.

5. Both together: se lo, se la

When both pronouns appear, the indirect goes first. And le or les before lo, la, los, las always becomes se — le lo doesn't exist.

indirectle / les + directlo · la · los · las =  se lo · se la…

Se can mean to him, her, you or them. If it's not clear, add the person at the end: Se lo doy a ella.
