Correlación de Tiempos

CEFR C1 · Lesson 4 of 9

You know all four subjunctives. This lesson is about choosing between them automatically, by looking at the main verb.

The core idea

By now you have four subjunctives: presente, perfecto, imperfecto, pluscuamperfecto. Which one you need isn't a free choice — the tense of the main verb decides it. Spanish grammarians call this la correlación de tiempos.

Two groups

Main verbs split into a present group and a past group, and each group licenses two subjunctives.

Present group
Main clauseSubordinateExample
presentepresente subj. (simultaneous/future)Quiero que vengas.
futuropresente subj.Te pediré que vengas.
pretérito perfectopresente subj.Le he dicho que venga.
imperativopresente subj.Dile que venga.
presenteperfecto subj. (already done)Dudo que haya venido.
Past group
Main clauseSubordinateExample
indefinidoimperfecto subj.Quise que vinieras.
imperfectoimperfecto subj.Quería que vinieras.
pluscuamperfectoimperfecto subj.Había pedido que vinieras.
condicionalimperfecto subj.Me gustaría que vinieras.
past grouppluscuamperfecto subj. (earlier still)Dudaba que hubiera venido.
💡

The two-question shortcut. First: is the main verb present-ish or past-ish? That picks the group. Second: is the subordinate action simultaneous/later, or already finished? That picks which of the group's two forms. Two questions, four possible answers, no memorisation.

The conditional belongs to the past group

This catches people out. Me gustaría, sería and podría are present in meaning but take the imperfect subjunctive.

Me gustaría que vinieras mañana.I'd like you to come tomorrow. — not vengas
Sería mejor que lo hicieras ahora. It would be better if you did it now.
¿Te importaría que abriera la ventana?Would you mind if I opened the window?

When the rule bends

If the subordinate action is still true now, a past main verb can take the present subjunctive. The rule follows meaning, not mechanics.

Te dije que vengas mañana.I told you to come tomorrow. — tomorrow is still ahead
Te dije que vinieras ayer.I told you to come yesterday. — fully in the past
🔎

Why this matters for writing. Sequence errors are the most common reason an otherwise fluent C1 text reads as non-native. The grammar is right in isolation but the tenses don't line up across the sentence.
