Conectores Formales

CEFR C2 · Lesson 6 of 9

The vocabulary of reports, essays and legal prose — and knowing when it would sound absurd to use it.

Register is the whole point

At B2 you learned connectors by function. At C2 the question is register: the same logical relation has a casual, a neutral and a formal expression, and using the wrong one is as noticeable as a grammar mistake.

⚠️

Formality is not a virtue in itself. Saying por consiguiente to a friend is as jarring as saying "así que" in a legal document. The skill is calibration, not escalation.

De ahí que takes the subjunctive. It's the one formal connector with a grammatical trap: Llovió mucho; de ahí que se cancelara el partido. Not se canceló. Examiners love this.

Examples in context

Habida cuenta de las circunstancias, se aplazó la reunión.Given the circumstances, the meeting was postponed.
Si bien es cierto que el coste es alto, los beneficios lo justifican. While it's true the cost is high, the benefits justify it.
Ahora bien, conviene matizar esa afirmación.That said, that claim needs qualifying.
En aras de la transparencia, se publicarán los datos. In the interest of transparency, the data will be published.
El plazo venció; por consiguiente, la solicitud fue rechazada. The deadline passed; consequently, the application was rejected.
🔎

Punctuation is part of the register. Formal connectors sit between commas and usually follow a semicolon or full stop: El plazo venció; por consiguiente, la solicitud fue rechazada. Running them in without punctuation undermines the formality you were reaching for.
