CEFR C2 · Lesson 5 of 9

The relative pronouns that only appear in careful writing — and the register signals that come with them.

Beyond QUE

At B1 you learned that que covers most cases. At C2 the question is different: when does que stop being enough, and what does choosing something else signal about register?

EL CUAL and its family

El cual, la cual, los cuales, las cuales are formal. They become genuinely useful — sometimes obligatory — after a long or compound preposition, where bare que would be unclear or ungrammatical.

When el cual earns its place
ContextExample

💡

The disambiguation trick. In La hermana de Juan, que vive en Lima, who lives in Lima — the sister or Juan? Swapping in la cual forces agreement with la hermana and resolves it. That's the real reason the form survives.

LO CUAL and LO QUE — referring to a whole idea

When the relative refers not to a noun but to everything just said, you need the neuter form.

Llegó tarde, lo cual me molestó mucho. He arrived late, which annoyed me a lot.
No contestó, lo que me pareció muy raro.He didn't answer, which struck me as very odd.
Todo lo que dijo era falso.Everything he said was false.

Lo cual only works in non-defining clauses, after a comma. Lo que works in both, which makes it the safer default.

CUYO — formal possession

Cuyo agrees with the thing possessed, never the owner. It belongs to written and formal registers; in speech people usually rephrase with de quien or split the sentence.

El autor cuya novela leímos vendrá mañana. The author whose novel we read is coming tomorrow.
Una empresa cuyos beneficios han caído.A company whose profits have fallen.
Un tema sobre cuya importancia no hay duda.A subject about whose importance there is no doubt.
⚠️

Cuyo is never interrogative. "Whose is this?" is ¿De quién es esto? — never ¿Cuyo es esto? Using cuyo as a question word is a mistake no native speaker makes, and an easy one for learners to invent.

QUIEN in literary register

Quien can open a clause with no antecedent at all, meaning "the one who". It's proverbial and literary.

Quien mucho abarca, poco aprieta. He who grasps at too much holds little. — proverb
Quien lo sepa, que lo diga.Whoever knows, let them say so.
Fue él quien lo propuso. It was he who proposed it. — emphatic cleft
